CHAPTER SEVEN

Hours later, we collapsed on the pillows, panting, our bodies slick with sweat. I was lying on my stomach with Lucien on top of me, my ass covered in his cum.

High on weed and lust, I felt my eyelids grow heavy with sleep.

I was fully satiated, my muscles relaxed, my mind at ease.

Camille will get such a kick out of this, I thought. A soft smile tilted my lips as I imagined her reaction to me fucking her cousin. And then it dawned on me.

She was dead.

I’d never see her again.

I’d never truly know how she’d react.

Tears burned the back of my throat and I wiggled to get out from underneath Lucien.

“Am I hurting you?” He rolled to the side to get his weight off me.

I curled on my side, facing away from him. My breath shuddered as I tried to suppress the tears.

“No, I’m fine.”

“Ashley,” he said, his tone filled with concern. “Did I hurt you?”

He tried to turn me towards him, but I couldn’t look him in the eye.

“I forgot,” I breathed. The ache in my heart was all consuming. All I could do was tuck my knees against my chest and focus on breathing.

Lucien curled his body against mine, wrapping me in a warm embrace. He was silent for a long time. When he spoke again, his voice was rough. Deep with sadness. “For a while there, I forgot, too. It doesn’t feel real.”

“Does that make us assholes?”

I came here to bury my best friend and ended up smoking weed and drinking wine all night. And fucking her cousin.

“Depends on who you ask, I guess.” He shifted and placed a soft kiss on my shoulder. “As far as I’m concerned, I’m glad you’re here. Not because of the sex, but because it’s nice to have someone who loves her to share this grief with.”

We were quiet for a while, two broken hearts lost deep in thought.

Swallowing my tears, I shifted to face him. His eyes were closed, his jaw locked tight. I smoothed the lines between his brows and pressed my forehead against his.

“I’m glad you’re here, too,” I whispered. He let out a shaky breath. “I was wondering how she would react when I told her about us. If she would find it funny.”

Lucien brushed his lips against mine. “Camille would’ve smacked me over the head and laughed at me for not listening to her sooner. She always said I would like you.” He pressed me a little closer to him. “She was right.”

My heart skipped a beat.

I had to remind myself this was fleeting.

One night only.

In the morning, I’d attend my best friend’s funeral. Watch them lower her into the ground. And soon after, fly back home.

“We should get cleaned up,” I said, silent tears cascading down my cheeks. But when I tried to move, he held me a little tighter.

Lucien sat up with me in his arms, my legs on either side of him. His lips brushed against mine in the softest caress. A shiver ran down my spine.
